On a dark and stormy night, sonicscribblings (C) and shutupandgetinthetardis (H) had a chat about the Fifth Doctor

shutupandgetinthetardis:

C: So much love for Five <3 Oh, and I should tell you my celery theory. Warning, it was the product of sleep deprivation and general silliness. “FORGET ROMANA, MOFFAT NEEDS TO BRING BACK THE CELERY. Actually, my theory is that the celery is indeed the Twelfth Doctor - Five found the celery, realized this, and stuck himself on his lapel for safe-keeping. UNTIL HE SWAPPED HIM FOR A PRETTIER CELERY IN ‘ENLIGHTENMENT’ BY MISTAKE D: Really.”
H: …What were you smoking at the time you wrote this down?
C: CELERY
H: …Touché

LATER THAT NIGHT

H: “Doctor, what is that?”
H: “It’s celery, I wore celery once, celery is cool.”
C: YES

THIS IS INDEED HOW MY MIND WORKS

“Davison’s Doctor is beautifully unaware that he is a hero — he simply responds as he feels he must when confronted with evil and injustice, and does so with a very ‘human’ sense of fluster and outrage. In one of the comparatively few perfect decisions in Doctor Who, Davison is allowed to finally expire saving, not the entire universe, but just one life. This isn’t to show, as has been suggested, that he’s any less capable or powerful than the other Doctors —just that, for him, saving one life is as great an imperative as saving a galaxy. This, then, is the Doctor as I believe he ought to be — someone who would brave a supernova to rescue a kitten from a tree.” —

Steven Moffat (via tinysprout)

This is one of the things that makes the direction RTD took the Doctor in during the Specials really, really irk me. It just wasn’t the Doctor. No character is perfect of course, and the Doctor has as many faults as anyone. But so much of what happened at the end conflicted so strongly with the Doctor’s core values, beliefs that have carried him forward so many times when he thought he couldn’t go on, that I felt like I wasn’t watching the Doctor anymore. It was someone else. And granted, characters can go down very dark, destructive paths - but then we as the devoted audience deserve to see them heal. The character deserves to heal. And with Ten, we got gypped.

I could write essays on what bothered me about those damn Specials. Maybe I will. I’m taking notes next time I watch them. /dork
